Automotive supplier relies on Siemens motor starters
HES Erkert Präzisionsteile GmbH is among Germany’s biggest suppliers of precision components. In the conveying systems used between its networked machine tools, the company has recently opted to use the new compact Simatic ET 200SP motor starters from Siemens which brings a number of added benefits: The hybrid technology used means a smaller footprint, reduced installation time, and a lower engineering and servicing workload. The components are also easy to integrate into the digitalization system, allowing important information to be gathered to ensure smooth operation.

With a workforce of around 1400, HES Erkert Präzisionsteile GmbH in Sulzbach an der Murr produces ultra-precise components in steel and aluminum, predominantly for the automotive industry. Production takes place in three shifts using a large number of machine tools which are linked by conveyor lines. Responsible for ensuring reliable transport are thousands of electric motors, which until recently were actuated by conventional motor feeders using contactors and circuit breakers.

These have now been replaced at HES by new Simatic ET 200SP motor starters. Not only are these wear-free and energy efficient, they also offer a range of benefits in terms of installation time, engineering and servicing.

Saving space and installation time

Because they use hybrid technology, these motor starters are far more compact than their predecessors, taking up only a third of the space. This allows significantly smaller control cabinet dimensions. The time required for installation is also reduced, as unlike conventional motor feeders they require no additional devices such as terminal blocks or power supplies. The spring-loaded terminal technology used throughout at HES in Sulzbach also speeds up installation, eliminating the need for wire end ferrules and enabling rapid cable contacting.

Valuable diagnostic information for improved availability

The advantages of new motor starters also benefit HES Erkert GmbH when it comes to engineering and servicing. Complete integration of the Simatic ET 200SP in the TIA Portal not only makes for simpler engineering, programming and parameterization, it also supplies valuable diagnostic information from the field level through to the control level. One of the ways the Sulzbach-based metalworking company utilizes this facility is for current measurement, which provides an indication of a conveyor belt drive failure as a result of wear or operating faults. This type of information plays a particularly important role in preventive maintenance and ultimately supports more efficient product management.

Using the hybrid Siemens motor starters has benefited HES Erkert GmbH in more ways than one, as the space requirement, installation time, engineering and servicing workload have all been substantially reduced.

The modular design enables simple in-row mounting of the Simatic ET 200SP motor starters, with time-saving installation enabled by the self-assembling power bus in conjunction with spring-loaded terminal technology.

Added value through a compact design: The new ET 200SP motor starters require around two thirds less space than the previous solution ET 200S, allowing a corresponding reduction in control cabinet size.
