SSI Schaefer builds automated high-bay warehouse for Zambelli

Zambelli is one of the leading manufacturers of roof drainage systems. Zambelli is also successful with solutions for building envelopes, shelving, industrial metal processing, caravaning, and heating technology – supplying customers all across Europe. One major challenge: in the roof drainage sector alone, the product range comprises more than 17,500 items. To handle this efficiently, the family-owned company is now relying on SSI Schaefer’s expertise and is building an automated logistics center in Grafenau.

At the heart of the solution is a silo-design high-bay warehouse that provides maximum storage density in a compact footprint, with 6,848 pallet storage locations. Four energy-efficient SSI Exyz storage and retrieval machines ensure 24/7 availability and direct access to every item – enabling high throughput and flexibility, even during seasonal peaks. Another advantage: since the compact racking system itself serves as the load-bearing structure for roof and walls, there is no need to construct an additional hall, significantly reducing installation time.
In the pre-building, areas for goods receipt, picking, and shipping are being created on two levels. The upper floor will house three picking stations, supplemented by a pallet wrapper and an empty pallet magazine. Connection to the lower floor is provided via a pallet lift. From there, pallets are transported to the shipping area via four buffer lanes. In addition, a conveyor bridge and two pallet lifts will link the new warehouse with the existing building to consolidate goods from the new site, with long goods stored in the existing facility.
The entire system will be controlled by the WAMAS logistics software, seamlessly integrated into the existing IT landscape. This holistic approach was a decisive factor for Zambelli when awarding the contract: “For our new warehouse, we did not want a stand-alone solution, but a flexible overall system that optimally supports our business processes,” explains Johannes Ranzinger, Managing Director of Zambelli Fertigungs GmbH & Co. KG. “The solution from SSI Schaefer literally brings our diverse requirements together under one roof and provides us with room for future growth.”
The groundbreaking ceremony on September 12, 2025, therefore marks not only the start of construction for the new logistics center but also the beginning of a long-term partnership between Zambelli and SSI Schaefer.
