Emerson has been selected by LyondellBasell to modernize the control systems and software at the company's Wesseling site in Germany

Emerson has been selected by multinational chemical company LyondellBasell to modernize the control systems and software at the company’s Wesseling site in Germany. The implementation of advanced automation technology will help to improve the operations of an ethylene cracker and butadiene production plant. Emerson’s digital tools and project engineering services will support the smooth execution of the plant’s planned shutdown in 2024.

LyondellBasell’s Wesseling site is the company’s largest production facility in Europe. LyondellBasell is standardizing its control system technology as part of a global modernization program. Emerson was selected for the project after demonstrating its ability to implement all hardware and software upgrades during the two-week shutdown period.

This will utilize Emerson’s DeltaV process control system and DeltaV Live software to operate the ethylene cracker safely and efficiently, while the company’s AMS Device Manager software will support the commissioning and ongoing maintenance of the field instruments. The advanced automation solutions will significantly reduce the development time required to implement the control strategies to improve efficiency. The DeltaV Live software provides advanced user interfaces that will simplify management of the equipment, allow operators to identify problems more quickly and maximize worker productivity.

Virtual DeltaV systems will also be used throughout the project to support development, testing and training. Operator training using Emerson’s MIMIC process simulation software will allow operators to familiarize themselves with the new control system prior to commissioning. This will minimize the risk of potential problems and optimize operator efficiency. On-site Emerson technicians will support commissioning and guide the implementation of advanced control strategies.

A suite of digital tools that streamline system modernization projects will make a critical contribution to meeting the schedule. These include Emerson REVAMP software, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to automate the task of identifying existing control system code to be used when creating the DeltaV system configuration, avoiding errors and reducing development time. Cloud-based Tools will support joint project planning and execution and streamline the design, development and testing phases. At the same time, a range of digital tools will simplify the connection of existing I/O to the new control system.

“Emerson is committed to helping customers modernize and digitally transform their manufacturing facilities to enable operational improvements,” said Claudio Fayad, Vice President of Technology for Emerson’s Process Systems and Solutions business. “AI, machine learning, cloud-based solutions and Emerson’s extensive project expertise will help LyondellBasell simplify the upgrade of its control system, reducing project execution time and mitigating risk.”

In the technical realm, “nano” means ten to the power of negative nine, or one billionth. In addition, parts even smaller than this are possible – for example, the intricate shapes that come out of the NanoOne 3D printer from UpNano. To produce these, light particles are fired at the starting material. This is a process that plays out over a range of thousandths of a millimeter. So that the substrate can be precisely aligned here, three compact, high-performance motors from Faulhaber ensure the correct position.
