IFCO has published its ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) goals for 2030, building on the savings achieved in the past year 2025.
In 2025, customers saved a total of 803,500 tonnes of CO₂ worldwide by using reusable packaging instead of single-use corrugated cardboard packaging. In addition, 56.7 million cubic metres of water, 16.6 million gigajoules of energy, 1.44 million tonnes of waste and 74,450 tonnes of avoided food waste were saved. The savings are based on life cycle assessments in accordance with ISO 14040/14044 compared to single-use packaging.
Thriving with purpose
The new ESG strategy for 2030, entitled “Thriving with Purpose”, now defines as its central goal the joint effort with customers to save one megatonne of CO₂ annually. Further goals include achieving short-term Science Based Targets by 2031 as well as progress towards a validated net-zero target. IFCO is aiming for 100 per cent renewable electricity at key service partners and reusable packaging manufacturers, intends to send zero waste to landfill and to fully upcycle all products at end of life.
Through partnerships with food banks, a total of 500,000 tonnes of food are to be rescued by 2030. The goals build on the previous ESG strategy, under which CO₂ emissions per crate were reduced by 37 per cent, water consumption per crate was lowered by 10 per cent, and a switch to 100 per cent renewable electricity was completed at the company’s own sites.
